A Childhood Friend whom I Envied

I thank my God every time I remember you.
-Philippians 1:3

She is everything I wanted to be.

She's outspoken, confident, quick-thinker, attractive (cute), witty, talented...

She was always a leader, since primary school days.
She was the President for every club she joined.
We joined the prefectorial board together, she became the assistant head prefect in no time.
Almost nobody can be champion/ best speaker in debates and speaking competitions if she's there.
She topped the school for SPM (O-Levels) and shocked everyone.

She knows how to please teachers.
She became the Principal's "best friend" when all the students and teachers in the school hate and were scare of the Principal.
Her parents dote on her.
Guys fly to her at the snap of her fingers.
Girls envy and get jealous of her.

I have lost touch with her since I left secondary school.
We took different paths and pursue our dreams.

Life is ironic.
When I thought she has everything I could ever wish for,
Mom broke out to me the news of her father's demise.
Mom told me her spoken English has improved, and that she sounded still as confident as ever.
The Principal was the first person she contacted.
She made all the decisions regarding her father's burial since she was the only child.

I was awed by her courage and calmness,
but somehow I'm not sure if she's just putting up a brave front,
and feeling an emptiness deep down in her.
She may have everything I wished to have in this world,
but I have one thing she doesn't have-

the Salvation of Jesus Christ.

She knows a little about the Bible, because she had a Christian babysitter.
She could even memorise the Lord's prayer better than me when we were in primary school!
However, somehow the gospel seed that was planted was taken away.
I pray that God will give me the heart of compassion,
for someone I used to envy so much,
but is merely a mortal like me.
